On November 7, Mr. Duong Chi Binh - Deputy Director of the Department of Construction of Bac Lieu province - said that the province has reported to the Ministry of Construction, asking for the Government's permission to allow Bac Lieu province to convert the function of the student dormitory into social housing in the form of apartments.
According to Mr. Binh, if approved, in the first quarter of 2025, 150 social housing apartments will be repaired and renovated from state budget funds.
The Bac Lieu province student dormitory project has a total estimated budget of 260 billion VND, located in Ward 1, Bac Lieu city, Bac Lieu province, invested by the Department of Construction.
The project was completed in 2015 with 2 fully-furnished buildings. Each building is 5 stories high, with 150 rooms and a capacity of 1,200 people. However, since then, these 2 buildings have remained vacant and are currently overgrown.
Since the handover to the Bac Lieu Province Housing and Land Fund Development Center (in 2015), this unit has repeatedly mobilized students from universities and colleges in the province to move in here, but only a few have lived there. In 2016, no students moved in, making the project ineffective. With no one living there, many parts of the project have now deteriorated.
Mr. Tran Van Vinh - a resident of Ward 1, Bac Lieu City - said that building a dormitory and then leaving it abandoned is a waste. It is appropriate for the province to switch to social housing so that the poor and those without housing conditions can live here.
