Ho Chi Minh City is preparing to clear more than 5,800 households in Chanh Hung and Binh Dong wards to implement a series of urban embellishment projects in the South bank of the Doi canal.

On December 28, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction said that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has assigned the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board to prepare a pre-feasibility study report for urban embellishment projects along the South bank of the Doi canal (formerly District 8 area).

According to the plan, the renovation of the South bank of the Doi canal will be divided into 4 projects, implemented in the period 2026 - 2029.

The urban embellishment project in the South bank of Doi canal - the section from Rach Ong bridge to Mat bridge (Chanh Hung ward) is expected to clear 860 houses, with a total investment of more than 5,400 billion VND.

The urban embellishment project in the South bank of Doi canal - the section from Mat bridge to Hiep An bridge (Chanh Hung ward) needs to clear 2,042 houses, with a total investment of more than 10,000 billion VND.

In Binh Dong ward, the urban embellishment project in the South bank of Doi canal - the section from Hiep An bridge to Ba Tang bridge is expected to relocate 1,278 households, with a total capital of nearly 9,600 billion VND.

The urban embellishment project in the South bank of the Doi canal - the section from Ba Tang bridge to the South bank of the Doi canal is expected to clear 1,627 households, with a total investment of more than 10,000 billion VND.

According to Mr. Giang Tuan Phat Dat - Head of the Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Department of Binh Dong ward, there are currently about 4,767 houses along and on canals and ditches in the ward, with more than 19,000 people living there.

Specifically, the project to renovate the South bank of the Doi canal in Binh Dong ward is expected to relocate 2,905 houses, with a total compensation, support and resettlement cost of more than 20,000 billion VND.

Mr. Giang Tuan Phat Dat said that the projects will invest in building a solid embankment, a traffic system along the South bank of the Doi canal and internal roads connecting to Pham The Hien street, thereby forming a synchronous and complete traffic network for the area.

To ensure the rights and stabilize people's lives after relocation, Binh Dong Ward People's Committee has proposed many specific mechanisms in compensation, support and resettlement.

In which, consider allowing eligible households to buy social housing, prioritizing housing projects near the relocated area; implement policies to support rent, buy houses in installments, installments with preferential or interest-free interest rates; and at the same time support employment, vocational training and loans for people.

Besides the South bank, the North bank of the Doi canal is also being renovated by Ho Chi Minh City on a section of about 4.3 km through Chanh Hung and Phu Dinh wards, with a total investment of more than 7,300 billion VND.

This project clears about 1,605 households, expected to be completed in 2028, contributing to improving the living environment, creating an urban landscape "on the wharf, under the boat", increasing traffic connectivity and promoting regional tourism development.

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has 398 rivers, canals, and ditches that have not been renovated, with about 39,600 houses that need to be relocated.

The city aims to relocate 50% of houses on and along canals and ditches by the end of 2030, equivalent to about 20,000 houses. In which, District 8 alone (formerly) accounted for more than 15,000 houses.
