HCMC clears nearly 2,000 households in the center to carry out 2 projects worth over VND 25,500 billion

Ho Chi Minh City reclaims land from nearly 3,100 households, of which nearly 2,000 households must clear the land to renovate Xuyen Tam canal and Van Thanh canal, with a total capital of more than VND 25,500 billion.

1,230 households were cleared to renovate Xuyen Tam canal

Xuyen Tam Canal is nearly 9 km long, connecting from Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal to Vam Thuat river, flowing through An Nhon ward (formerly Go Vap district), Gia Dinh, Binh Thanh and Binh Loi Trung (formerly Binh Thanh district).

The project has a total investment of more than VND17,000 billion, of which the cost of compensation, support and resettlement alone accounts for VND14,000 billion.

The Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board ( urban Infrastructure Board) said that the XL-03 package (through An Nhon and Binh Loi Trung wards) has started construction since May 2025, but there are still problems with the site clearance of 42 households.

The other two packages, XL-01 and XL-02 through Binh Thanh, Gia Dinh and Binh Loi Trung wards, have completed the selection of contractors, expected to start construction in November 2025 and complete the entire route in 2028.

However, these two packages have not yet been handed over the land to more than 2,230 households and organizations. Of these, 1,230 households and 23 organizations were cleared, the remaining 824 cases were partially affected.

Compensation and site clearance work still has many problems related to cases of buying, selling, transferring, donating with handwritten documents or documents; rental prices and rental prices for social housing; minimum resettlement regulations, etc.

According to the direction of the City Party Secretary Tran Luu Quang and the Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the compensation, site clearance and resettlement work must be completed in November 2025.

The Xuyen Tam canal renovation project includes items such as dredging the canal bed to a depth of 3.5 m, expanding the canal bed from 20 - 30 m, building a wastewater and rainwater collection system, along with 6 m wide roads on both banks, 3 - 4 m sidewalks and a green park system.

When completed, the project will not only solve the problem of prolonged pollution and flooding but also form public spaces, roads along canals and landscape parks, changing the appearance of the inner city of Ho Chi Minh City.

Clearing 749 households to renovate Van Thanh canal

Along with Xuyen Tam canal, Ho Chi Minh City also implemented the Van Thanh canal renovation project (formerly Binh Thanh district, now Thanh My Tay ward) with a total investment of more than VND 8,555 billion.

The project is divided into two component projects: Site clearance, resettlement of more than VND6,812 billion and construction of more than VND1,743 billion.

In total, there are 1,077 cases of land acquisition, of which 749 households must be completely relocated.

According to the Urban Infrastructure Board, the construction component project will be submitted for approval in December 2025, started in early 2027 and completed in 2029.

The component project for compensation and resettlement will prepare an estimate and submit for approval before December 10, 2025, and conduct payment and handover of the site in 2026.

The project will renovate the nearly 2 km long Van Thanh canal (from Vo Oanh street to Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal) and a 275 m long branch of the canal.

The canal was dredged 3 m deep, widened to 25 - 50 m, and concrete embankments were built on both sides to prevent coastal protection. Along with that, a 6 - 20 m wide road along the canal will be built.

Phu An Bridge will be newly built, 17 m wide; Ngo Tat To Street (from Phu An Bridge to Phu My Street) will be expanded to a 25 m wide road. In addition, a parallel road connecting to Dien Bien Phu axis will also be formed.

The project also invests in a drainage system, collects wastewater and plans more than 4.2 hectares of land along the canal to become parks, green areas and technical infrastructure works, contributing to improving the landscape and improving the quality of life for people.
