There are times when watching Tottenham is exhilarating. However, there is always a fragility to their play.
"Aren't you having fun?" joked coach Agne Postecoglou after Tottenham's chaotic 4-3 win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup. And no one can deny what the Australian strategist said. However, the "Roosters" simply provide entertainment and no competition.
Injuries have been a major factor in Tottenham's inconsistency, with young defender Archie Gray taking on the role of centre-back for the third time in a week, while Fraser Forster has once again looked uncertain as he replaces first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Still, it is difficult to find excuses for Postecoglou's continued persistence in his relentless attacking style of play, and against a flying Liverpool side, Spurs, with a depleted squad, showed no sign of backing down.
Postecoglou has actually won the trust of the "Rooster" management and fans with his all-out attacking style. And even after losing 3-6 to Liverpool, there are still people who believe in Postecoglou. In the stands, there are only a few insignificant boos.
Yet again, there is a sense that Tottenham must get this chaos under control if they are to find the consistency needed to challenge for the title, having kept just one clean sheet in their last 24 home games.
"I think I've been very patient in being here for the last 18 months and answering these questions over and over again. If people want me to change my approach, I'm not going to change it. We did it for a reason, we believe it will be successful.
I understand that people want me to change, and that somehow it will magically make us a better team. But accept it. I will continue like this, trying to build the team as I want. For now, we will accept that there will be obstacles on the way" - Postecoglou said after the defeat to Liverpool.
Tottenham fans’ discontent with chairman Daniel Levy is another issue. They are unhappy with Levy on a number of fronts, most notably his lack of ambition in the transfer market. Tottenham’s frugality often means they miss out on landmark signings.
Notably, Luis Diaz and Mac Allister - both of whom excelled for Liverpool at Tottenham - have both been targets for Spurs.
The Spurs have made some good signings, with Micky van de Ven being one of the standout deals. However, Liverpool have shown that their methodical transfer strategy is much more effective.
