Before Alejandro Garnacho and Lisandro Martinez, there have been a few Argentine stars at Old Trafford like Gabriel Heinze and Carlos Tevez. They all came, impressed for a while and then left for various reasons. Martinez could also leave at some point in the future but with Garnacho, if that happens now it could be a disadvantage for Man United.
In the recent match against Rangers, although he did not score, Garnacho left the most impressive performance since coach Ruben Amorim arrived. The potential of this young star is still very much, Amorim really wants to exploit it to the fullest, but if he cannot keep him, he will have no choice.
The next 10 days will be crucial for Garnacho's future as the winter transfer window closes. On February 2, Man United will face Crystal Palace. If the 20-year-old leaves Old Trafford smoothly, the match against Fulham on January 27 will be his last appearance for the Red Devils (if he plays).
After the win over Rangers, Ruben Amorim spoke vaguely about his student's future. The 39-year-old strategist shared that anything can happen until the winter transfer window closes. Amorim's statement is not a denial that Garnacho is about to leave M.U, it is an admission that any scenario can happen. Once the head coach speaks vaguely about a player's future, the destination of that star can change very quickly.
In Amorim's 3-4-3 formation, Garnacho's position is perhaps the most awkward. The Argentine striker is very suitable in theory because he is a pure winger and a disruptive player. However, when assembled into the team, Garnacho often proves to be harmless. The most recent Manchester Derby was the time when Garnacho was not included in the registration list. Since then, he has only started 3/9 Man United matches.
After the match against Rangers, Amorim said Garnacho played well with many assigned tasks. The M.U captain also praised his student's spirit of burning out in the final minutes. Amorim said Garnacho still has a lot of potential to develop and he is trying to exploit that.
Garnacho is still very young, and his potential is clearly seen. Recently, he has gradually moved inside to play closer to the penalty area, instead of simply drifting to the wing to be caught. If Amorim is given more time, things might go well for both teachers and students. However, Amorim is only the head coach, not the manager. All matters related to personnel transfers will be handled by INEOS. If the club owners want to sell Garnacho to get money to buy someone else, Amorim will have no choice.
Garnacho's replacement at Old Trafford (if any) will have to provide the same energy as the Argentine star, thereby matching Amad Diallo on the opposite wing. If Garnacho is sold but no one is found in the context of Marcus Rashford being "beyond cure", Man United will face a big risk.
INEOS are reluctant but their recent management style has always put financial matters above all else. If Garnacho joins Chelsea for the rumoured €70m, it will be a huge deal for Man United.
