Chelsea continued to disappoint at St James' Park when they only won a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United, thereby extending their streak of not winning here for the past 3 years (4 losses, 1 draw).
This result has caused The Blues to not be able to create a safe gap in the race for the top 4, when they are only 3 points ahead of the teams ranked from 5th to 8th.
After the defeat to Sunderland, Newcastle entered the match with high determination and soon concretized the advantage.
In the 4th minute, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez blocked Anthony Gordon's first shot, but could not stop Nick Woltemade from breaking into the opening goal.
The German striker continued to surprise when he completed his double in the 20th minute, finishing close to the goal after a difficult cross from Gordon.
Chelsea were at a disadvantage for much of the first half. Their efforts to narrow the gap were not rewarded as Pedro Neto's goal was disallowed for touch. Newcastle would have widened the gap if Woltemade had taken advantage of another clear opportunity before the break.
In the second half, Chelsea showed a completely different face. In the 49th minute, captain Reece James rekindled hope with a classy free kick, hitting the post and going straight into the net.
The pressure was maintained by the away team and in the 66th minute, Joao Pedro scored the equalizer after a neat handling and a cool finish from a long pass from Sanchez.
The final minutes were tense as both teams had a chance to decide the match. Reece James promptly saved the goal from Harvey Barnes, while Anthony Elanga missed a golden opportunity to help Newcastle win all 3 points.
In the end, the two teams agreed to share the points with a score of 2-2.
