Coming to Man United in the summer of 2018, Diogo Dalot is expected to become the "new Garry Neville" at Old Trafford. The first season was considered a stable one as Dalot made 23 appearances in all competitions, including 15 starts. Playing well in both right midfield and right forward positions, the player born in 1999 received a lot of trust from Jose Mourinho.
However, the poor performance caused the "Special One" to be sent off from M.U. Ole Solskjaer took charge and this was a really difficult time for Dalot. Continuous injuries and the brilliance of rookie Aaron Wan-Bissaka turned the Portuguese defender into a "surplus". This season, Diogo Dalot has only played 10 times and mainly from the bench.
Despite many uncertainties about his future, Dalot has affirmed that he will stay at Man United. He even publicly wants to compete for a position with Wan-Bissaka at right-back.
"I can play in any position that the coach requires. However, I have been at my best at right-back. That is my strength position and also a long-term orientation for me to develop my career. I definitely want to shape myself as a right-back.
I am enjoying everything, working hard and wanting to be the best version of myself in that position. I am not afraid to compete with any opponent to prove myself," Dalot said.
Currently, Man United's right-hand man position is being sealed for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, a £50 million "blockbuster" who moved from Crystal Palace last summer. If he wants to beat the England international, Dalot will have to try much harder.
