Manchester City's poor run of form continued over the weekend as they were beaten by Aston Villa.
It was their ninth defeat in 12 games in all competitions, and they were seventh in the Premier League at Christmas, a significant drop from the last four seasons for the Etihad outfit.
Easy schedule
Man City can take some solace in the fact that their upcoming fixtures are not difficult tests. Their next five Premier League opponents - Everton, Leicester, West Ham, Brentford and Ipswich - are all in the bottom half of the table. This is an opportunity for Guardiola's side to regain confidence.
However, opponents will surely note how Villa have exposed their weaknesses and exploited their faltering confidence, and Everton, after holding Chelsea to a fine draw, can look to spring a surprise at the Etihad on Boxing Day.
Other leagues besides Premier League
While the chance to defend the Premier League title is out of reach, Man City still has hope in other tournaments if they wake up in time.
They may also be struggling in the Champions League, but just one win from their remaining two games will see City through. Guardiola's side also have an easy start to the FA Cup when they host Salford at home.
Injury situation improved
While there were many factors that led to The Citizens' decline, it is clear that injuries have played a major role.
The loss of holding midfielder Rodri for the rest of the season is a blow, while the defence lacks solidity with full-backs John Stones, Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji all out of form.
While there is no prospect of Rodri returning any time soon, resolving the other issues would help Man City regain the squad depth they need.
Transfer
Guardiola likes to work with a small squad size. While this quality-over-quantity approach has worked wonders, it only takes a few serious injuries to cause City problems.
The quick fix would be for the Citizens to spend in January. Guardiola has said he is “not a big fan” of the mid-season transfer window and City rarely spend big money, but the Spaniard has acknowledged the “special circumstances” this time around.
Reduce workload
One or two new players, as well as reinforcements, could help Man City raise their intensity. After years of conquering the top, it is inevitable that many stars will lose form.
Indeed, many of City’s players have fallen below the standards they once set. While age may catch up with some stars, a break would benefit everyone. A carefully considered signing, even if it is only a temporary solution, could help change the dynamic at the Citizens.
