Overview
Manchester City started the 2026-2027 Premier League season with a home game against Bournemouth at the Etihad, opening a new chapter after Pep Guardiola left the coaching position. Enzo Maresca was tasked with maintaining the position of the team that has dominated English football for a decade.
After 10 years under Guardiola, Man City must get used to a new apparatus. Maresca used to be Guardiola's assistant and was chosen for the successor position. However, he does not have much time to enjoy the transition when the squad has had major changes in the summer.
Rodri has left Man City to join Barcelona, while Bernardo Silva and John Stones are no longer in this season's plans. Rodri's departure especially leaves a large gap in midfield. Maresca admits Man City will have to find a player who can take on a similar role, instead of trying to restore Guardiola's original squad.
Man City has brought Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for 116 million pounds. The English midfielder is expected to become an important part of the midfield reconstruction process. However, replacing a Ballon d'Or winner like Rodri cannot be solved with just one contract.
The 0-3 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield made the match against Bournemouth even more important. That was the first time Maresca led Man City in an official match and the performance at Cardiff showed that they still needed time to adapt to changes on the coaching bench and in the squad.
However, history is still on Man City's side. They have won the Premier League opening match in 14 of the last 15 seasons. At home, the record against Bournemouth is also particularly overwhelming when Man City has won all 9 times against this opponent in the Premier League, scoring 34 goals and conceding only 6 goals.
Bournemouth also begins a new chapter. Marco Rose was appointed to replace Andoni Iraola after the team finished last season in sixth place and won a ticket to the Europa League. Rose will have to maintain the foundation left by Iraola, while helping Bournemouth adapt to having to play on many fronts.
Bournemouth has a fairly active pre-season preparation process, but the results in the Premier League opening matches are not really good. They have only won 2 in the last 9 opening matches. The head-to-head record with Man City is also very different when Bournemouth has only won 1 in 18 encounters in the highest league.
However, Bournemouth is not an easy opponent to beat. They only lost 7 matches in 38 rounds last season, the third best record in the league after Arsenal and Man City. The 18-match unbeaten streak at the end of last season also shows that this team is capable of causing difficulties for strong opponents.
Score prediction: Man City 1-0 Bournemouth
The match between Man City and Bournemouth takes place at 8:00 p.m. on August 23 (Vietnam time).
