Real Madrid's homepage has just announced that it has successfully recruited Ferland Mendy with a 6-year contract. To get the French defender's services, the Bernabeu team had to pay Lyon 48 million euros plus 5 million euros in fees arising from competition achievements.
Mendy has become the second most expensive defender in Real Madrid's history, behind Eder Militao, another rookie at the club. Militao was previously bought from Porto for 50 million euros.
Ferland Mendy will be the perfect competitor and a long-term replacement for veteran Marcelo, who is 31 years old this year. In the 2018/2019 season, the defender born in 1994 won the title of best player of Lyon.
Thereby, he came to the attention of many "big guys" such as Juventus, PSG or Real Madrid. Finally, the Bernabeu team quickly got the 25-year-old defender's signature.
At the press conference held on June 10, French coach Didier Deschamps gave his student many compliments: "Ferland has had remarkable development. Two years ago, he was playing in Ligue 2 and now has the opportunity to play for Real Madrid. Mendy is good with both feet and always shows great performance whenever he has the chance."
Mendy was officially Real Madrid's 5th "signer" in the summer transfer window of 2019, after Eder Militao from Porto (50 million euros), Rodrygo from Santos (45 million euros), Luka Jovic from Frankfurt (60 million euros) and Eden Hazard from Chelsea (90 million euros).
He is expected to make his new club debut at the Bernabeu on June 19
