Paris St Germain and Atletico Madrid will meet for the first time at the FIFA Club World Cup. Both teams are participating in the tournament for the first time when they have never qualified under the old format.
PSG entered the FIFA Club World Cup after one of their most successful campaigns in their history. Luis Enrique's side have completed a historic treble, winning Ligue 1, Coupe de France and the UEFA Champions League. They became the ninth European team to achieve that feat.
PSG's highlight of the season was their resounding 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final. PSG became the second French team to win this tournament after Marseille's success in 1993.
Under Enrique, PSG has transformed from a superstar squad to a more balanced and cohesive team, with quality distributed throughout the pitch.
They have scored 152 goals in 58 games this season, with only Barcelona (174 goals in 60 games) achieving better results in Europe's top five leagues.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid entered the tournament without any titles since winning La Liga in the 2020-2021 campaign.
There were periods in the 2024-2025 season when Atletico looked more formidable than ever under Diego Simeone. Most notably, the club's record-breaking 15-game winning streak from October to January.
They topped La Liga in early 2025, but a series of poor performances from mid-January to mid-February disrupted the Madrid capital's title race.
The two teams have only met once before in the Champions League group stage last season. Atletico Madrid won 2-1 at the Parc des Princes.
