Liverpool have been given a boost as Alexis Mac Allister returned to training with Argentina after picking up a knock in their 3-0 win over Chile. The 25-year-old midfielder started the game and scored the opening goal, but was replaced by Paulo Dybala late on. The Liverpool man is said to be "uncomfortable" with the injury.
The Kop were left worried by the news, with Mac Allister playing a key role in Arne Slot's perfect start to the Premier League season. However, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has eased Liverpool's concerns after confirming the 25-year-old has recovered. Mac Allister could feature in the next game against Colombia.
"The team is fine, recovering from the match against Chile with some common ailments. Nico Gonzalez trained separately and Alexis Mac Allister trained with the rest of the team. We will see how they progress in the last two days to decide how we will play" - Scaloni said.
Liverpool's next game is a home game against Nottingham Forest on 14 September, and there are concerns that Mac Allister will be racing to a full recovery. However, Scaloni has revealed that the 25-year-old's injury is not too serious.
The former Brighton man could make his 33rd appearance for Argentina when the Albiceleste take on Colombia. Mac Allister has been in impressive form for his country in recent times.
In the match between Argentina and Colombia, Mac Allister will have to face Liverpool teammate Luis Diaz. Both will try to play well to help their countries gain important points in the qualifying round.
Argentina currently leads the South American qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup, with 6 wins, only 1 loss and 18 points. Uruguay is second with 14 points, 1 point ahead of third-placed Colombia. Diaz and his teammates can close the gap to Argentina to 2 points if they defeat their opponents in the early morning of September 11.
Mac Allister has played every minute of Liverpool's new season so far, and along with Ryan Gravenberch, the pair have been key in setting the tempo of the Reds' attack.
Liverpool's other injury concerns include Curtis Jones, who picked up a problem last month, while new signing Federico Chiesa is still not fit after his £12.5m move from Juventus, while Harvey Elliot has left the England Under-21s training camp to assess his fitness.
