How bold is Man City in the winter transfer market?

VIỆT HÙNG |

Despite being pressured by more than 100 allegations of financial violations, Man City still spent 178 million pounds in the winter transfer window.

In the final hours of the 2025 winter transfer market, Man City had the 4th new player, Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto for 49 million pounds. Thus, The Citizens welcomed a total of 4 new players in the winter market with a total value of 178 million pounds. The three previous contracts were Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

In recent years, the Etihad Stadium team has not been in the habit of shopping at the mid-season player market. However, this time is completely different due to the urgent situation on many aspects of the team.

The £178m spent by Man City in the past month accounts for 44% of the total amount spent on players by the 20 Premier League teams. Wolves are the second team on this list, having spent £42m because they are in a fierce relegation race and need to add personnel to hope to stay in the league. However, when looking at the amount spent by Man City and Wolves, we can see how big the gap is.

If we exclude Man City's £178m from the Premier League's total spending, the amount spent by the English top flight in the winter transfer window would be on par with the other four major European leagues (around £220m). The Premier League clubs would then only be negative £84m in the recent winter transfer window.

£178m is the most a reigning Premier League champion has ever spent in a single winter transfer window, since the Arab owners took over Man City in autumn 2008.

Currently, Man City is 15 points behind Liverpool on the rankings and Pep himself said that the hope of the championship race is gone. Therefore, when ready to be the former champion, The Citizens will do their best to keep a position in the Top 4. After the crushing 1-5 loss to Arsenal in round 24, they are still in 4th place with 41 points after 24 matches. This is also the number of points of Newcastle and the two teams have the same goal difference (13). Man City is currently ranked higher due to other sub-indices such as more goals (48 compared to 42).

Many teams have reached the threshold of being ready to violate the PSR (financial sustainability rules of the Premier League) and decided not to spend in this winter market. Thereby, they have achieved balance after the summer of 2024 and prepare to aim for the goals in the summer of 2025. Man City's spending so much has left many skeptics.

Man City's punishment after receiving 115 charges of financial violations could come later this year as the hearings have officially started from September 16, 2024 and end in May 2025. With Pep Guardiola having agreed to stay for another 2 years, if the team is hit with a transfer ban in the next few years, the names he has just brought in during the winter market will be the club's savior.

Man City's current squad has quite a few aging players who may leave en masse in the next two player markets. Those who are still fit like Haaland, Foden, Doku... will lead the new generation of players who have just arrived to be the manpower for the next stormy period of The Citizens.
