Anyone who watched the first 80 minutes of Man United's game against Southampton would have been worried about what Brighton could do at Old Trafford, and in that sense it was entirely predictable that the Seagulls would leave Manchester with a comfortable win.
Man United fought back against Southampton to win 3-1. However, that was not the case against Brighton and the visitors could have won by even more. The "Seagulls" scored 3 goals, had another ruled out by VAR and missed many chances late in the game.
Manager Ruben Amorim is keen to take the blame for Man United's poor run of results. But this is no longer a surprise at Old Trafford. Brighton have won their last three games at Old Trafford under three different managers. The problem is not Amorim, it's the circumstances he faces.
“We have to acknowledge this moment and not shy away from it. Everyone here is underperforming. Regardless of the circumstances, we are all underperforming and we have to accept that.
"It's unacceptable to lose so many games. It's a really difficult moment, but we have to keep going, there's no other way. We have to endure and keep going," Amorim said after the defeat to Brighton.
The most blameworthy thing for the "Red Devils" was that they lost easily to Brighton who were not in good form. They traveled to Old Trafford having won only 1 of their last 9 Premier League matches. But instead of playing in a disjointed manner, the "Seagulls" leisurely went to victory.
The last time Brighton scored three goals in a Premier League game was in October 2024 against a weak Tottenham defence.
Meanwhile, the "Red Devils" had just one shot on target, coming from a first-half penalty by Bruno Fernandes. For the first time in 9 years, they did not have a shot on target from open play in a Premier League match at Old Trafford.
The defeat to Brighton was United's sixth Premier League home defeat of the season - their most in their first 12 home games in a season in 130 years. The last time that happened - in the 1893-94 season - they weren't even called Man United (they were Newton Heath instead) and played at Bank Street.
Amorim has now lost seven of his first 15 games in charge of United, the first United manager to do so since Jimmy Murphy, who took temporary charge after the Munich air disaster in 1958.
"We are probably the worst team in Manchester United's history. In the last 10 Premier League games, we have only won three. We need to survive now," Amorim added.
Perhaps, what Man United need to do right now is to find themselves before thinking about other goals.
