“Man United's squad after Amorim's January 2025 transfer window is no better than when he took over the team,” commented Sky Sports.
Scoring has been a persistent problem for Man United this season. They have scored just 28 goals in 24 Premier League games this season, an average of 1.17 goals per game. That is only better than Leicester City, Ipswich, Southampton and Everton.
Ruben Amorim was keen to strengthen his attack in the mid-season transfer window. But in the end, Man United parted ways with more strikers, instead of bringing in new ones.
Winger Antony and striker Marcus Rashford have gone on loan to other clubs, while the Old Trafford club have only signed Danish full-back Patrick Dorgu and promising young centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal.
United have been linked with a number of forwards across Europe, including Randal Kolo Muani (PSG), Christopher Nkunku (Chelsea), Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich) and Leon Bailey (Aston Villa), among others, showing they are aware of the need to strengthen their attack.
However, the results were not as expected by Man United. So why did the Old Trafford team not recruit any more attacking players?
Sky Sports pundit Melissa Reddy explains: "Manchester United have not been reckless or taken on the costly, risky nature of the mid-season transfer window.
They will have more time to spend in the 2025 summer transfer window, when they will have more opportunities to sign players who fit their long-term plans.
Man United are operating within financial constraints to comply with very strict profit and sustainability regulations (PSR) and they do not want to sign players who they feel could compromise their long-term strategy on expensive short-term contracts.
“Manchester United want to maintain financial discipline as they make widespread changes to the club and continue to look at options to reduce costs and increase revenue, which they believe will generate more money to invest in the team.”
With the current situation, Ruben Amorim has to manage with the available force to compete in 3 arenas: Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League.
According to expert Gary Neville, Man United's current squad is no weaker than before the January 2025 transfer window. However, Ruben Amorim will face many difficulties to help the team play well.
“Marcus Rashford didn’t play before he left anyway. United need a left-back because they don’t have the balance at the other end of the pitch. Amorim knows there’s not much money when he takes the job and everyone knows the financial situation at United. They’ll look to the summer transfer window to reinvest in the team,” said Gary Neville.
According to Neville, changing the playing system, the enthusiasm and determination of Ruben Amorim will help Man United. But from now until the summer of 2025 is still a long time, so Man United will face many difficulties in the remaining stages of the season.
