Premier League sets revenue record, far ahead of the rest of Europe

The revenue gap between the Premier League and the top European national leagues continues to increase, reflecting the increasing attraction of English football.

The Premier League continues to affirm its financial number one position, far ahead of the remaining top 4 European leagues. According to Deloitte's annual football finance report, the Premier League's revenue in the 2024-2025 season reached 6.8 billion pounds, an increase of 8% compared to the previous season.

This growth is driven by the impressive performance of English clubs in European cups after UEFA expanded the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League formats. Deloitte forecasts that Premier League revenue will exceed £7 billion in the 2025-2026 season thanks to new television rights contracts and the presence of three representatives in European cup finals.

Commercial revenue continues to be the largest source of revenue for Premier League clubs, increasing by 13%, reaching £2.4 billion. 6 teams in the "Big Six" group contribute up to 73% of the league's total commercial revenue.

In addition, revenue from ticket sales and daily activities exceeded the 1 billion pound mark for the first time, increasing by 15% to 1.02 billion pounds. The growth came from higher ticket prices, expanded stadium capacity and more clubs going deep in European leagues. Meanwhile, television rights revenue increased by 2%, reaching 3.4 billion pounds.

However, the downside of the growth is that the pre-tax loss of Premier League clubs increased sharply from £135 million in the 2023-2024 season to £948 million in the 2024-2025 season. The main reason comes from increased transfer costs and reduced profits from player sales compared to the previous season. The net debt of the teams also increased from £3.5 billion to £3.6 billion.

In Spain, La Liga clubs recorded revenue of about 3.5 billion pounds, an increase of 9% compared to last season but still just over half of the Premier League. Real Madrid and Barcelona alone contribute about 52% of the total revenue of the league.

Serie A achieved revenue of 2.56 billion pounds, up 4%, of which Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan accounted for 45% of total revenue.

Contrary to the growth trend of the above three leagues, Ligue 1 witnessed a 15% decrease in revenue, from £2.22 billion to £1.88 billion. A sharp drop in commercial revenue made the slight increase from television rights and ticket sales not enough to compensate.

In general, the top 5 European national leagues recorded a pre-tax loss of £1.28 billion in the 2024-2025 season, nearly double the £682 million of the previous season.

In general, the financial gap between the Premier League and the rest of European football is still continuing to widen. Although many leagues have recorded revenue growth, commercial attraction, television rights value and the ability to exploit the global market of English football is still at a different level.

However, the fact that Premier League clubs record increased losses and net debts is also a warning that revenue growth does not mean financial efficiency. In the context of escalating transfer costs and wages, the balance between investment, competition and sustainable development will continue to be a major challenge for top European teams.
