Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his staff have activated a one-year extension clause in Erik ten Hag's contract in the summer of 2024. But just a few months later, Man United decided to fire Ten Hag and compensate 10.4 million pounds.
The club also chased Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth for a long time, but fired him less than six months later, with a compensation of £3 million.
In response to criticism from fans, the British billionaire himself admitted that both of the above decisions were costly mistakes.
Ratcliffe said in an interview with the British media: We are not perfect, we are walking and have made a few mistakes on this journey, but I think basically, everything we are doing is the right thing for the club.
"I agree that the decision to bring on Erik ten Tag and Dan Ashworth was wrong. I think there are some reasons to justify, but at the end of the day, it is a mistake. I accept it and I apologize for that."
Sir Jim Ratcliffe explained that it is difficult to evaluate Ten Hag's performance.
"Is inconsistency a problem for Ten Hag or the organization around him? And I think we can't really get to the end of the answer. So we took advantage of Erik from this hesitation," the British billionaire shared.
Man United are currently 14th in the table. According to Ratcliffe, the team aims to win the Premier League by 2028 - on the occasion of the club's 150th anniversary.
