Ruben Amorim has arrived in England as the latest coach tasked with bringing back the glory days of Manchester United.
Amorim is the 6th official "captain" to work at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson resigned in 2013, after David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag.
The remaining five managers have all produced different results, but none have been able to help Man United return to the top in the Premier League or Champions League.
At just 39, Amorim has built a reputation as one of the best young coaches in Europe after winning two domestic titles with Sporting CP. He admitted that his mission at Man United will be very difficult, but also affirmed his readiness for the challenge of turning the tide of one of the world's biggest clubs.
As Amorim's reign prepares to start with the match against Ipswich Town on November 24, there will be a series of problems that the Portuguese strategist will face. One of them is the choice of full-backs.
Speaking after his final match in charge of Sporting, Amorim suggested continuing to apply his favorite 3-4-3 formation at Man United.
"You have to start with a structure you know," said the Portuguese. There is no reason why Amorim should not do the same because that is how he succeeded at Sporting. However, the problem is that Amorim inherits a formation built for variations of the 4-3-3.
Man United have 6 centre-backs, enough depth for 3 central defensive positions. However, finding a full-back could be a bit more complicated. Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Luke Shaw are the leading candidates, but what about Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo?
When attacking, Amorim's 2 full-backs will move very high, like 2 wingers. But when defending, his team will take it back to a 5-4-1 formation to be able to withstand the opponent's attacks. This could see Garnacho and Amad deployed as full-backs.
If so, they will have to take on more defensive responsibilities than before. It will obviously take a while for Garnacho and Amad to adapt to this.
Leading a club with a lack of personnel and a foundation in line with his favorite tactical diagram is clearly a big risk for Amorim.
