On the morning of March 7 (Vietnam time), Inter Miami hosted a team from Jamaica, Cavalier, in the 1/8 round of the Concacaf Champions Cup. In this match, Inter Miami continued to be without the service of superstar Lionel Messi.
Cavalier surprised everyone when he was the team that took the initiative right after the opening whistle. Dwayne Atkinson had a dangerous shot in the 6th minute but the ball went over the bar. Then, Jalmaro Calvin also caused Inter Miami's defense to sway with a shot just wide of the goal.
However, after a confusing first few minutes, Inter Miami gradually regained control of the game and created some dangerous opportunities. In the 32nd minute, Telasco Segovia had a shot in the penalty area but was promptly blocked by defender Cavalier. After that, Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez had opportunities but could not turn them into goals.
At the end of the first half, Cavalier's Shaquille Stein seemed to have given the visitors the lead, but this goal was disallowed for offside.
In the second half, Inter Miami stepped up their attack in search of an opening goal. In the 50th minute, David Martinez had a good chance in the penalty area but his shot was blocked. Despite continuing to create pressure, the home team still could not penetrate Cavalier's defense.
Inter Miami's efforts were finally rewarded in the 61st minute. From a corner kick, Sergio Busquets assisted Tadeo Allende, and the midfielder did not miss the opportunity, finishing accurately into the low left corner of the goal to open the score for the home team.
With the lead, Inter Miami played more excitedly. Although Luis Suarez could not score at one chance in the 73rd minute, just 10 minutes later, he had a decisive shot from the middle, sealing a 2-0 victory for coach Rafael Mascherano's team.
With this victory, Inter Miami has a significant advantage before the return match away to Jamaica on March 14.
