The minimal defeat against Japan caused England a major shock, and also marked the first time in history they lost to an Asian representative. The only goal was scored by Kaoru Mitoma in the 23rd minute, after a sharp counter-attack with a strong collective mark of the "Blue Samurai".
Coach Thomas Tuchel fielded the strongest possible squad. Marc Guehi first wore the captain's armband and soon made his mark with two consecutive chances from corner kicks. However, while controlling the game, the "Three Lions" were unexpectedly punished.
Mitoma stole the ball from Cole Palmer, quickly coordinated with Keito Nakamura before launching a cold-blooded finish to defeat Jordan Pickford.
The conceded goal made England confused. They only really created a clear opportunity in the 34th minute when Elliot Anderson forced goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to show his save. In the opposite direction, Ayase Ueda even hit the crossbar, almost doubling the score.
Stepping into the second half, Japan continued to be the sharper team. Ritsu Doan and Nakamura continuously stirred up the opponent's defense. Although Tuchel made many personnel adjustments, England was still deadlocked in deploying attacks.
The late efforts of Marcus Rashford, Jarrod Bowen or Harry Maguire could not be converted into goals. The match ended with a forgettable defeat for the "Three Lions", also the first time they have been goalless since June 2024.
