President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Rafael Louzan has set the next goal of ensuring a two-year contract extension with the head coach of the Spanish national team, Luis de la Fuente.
The current agreement between the two sides is valid until the end of EURO 2028, but Mr. Louzan is considering renewing and adjusting the contract to suit the achievements of a coach among the most elite in the world.
Right before the 2026 World Cup final, Mr. Louzan revealed plans to extend his contract with Mr. Fuente and his assistants. He shared: "I am responsible for Mr. Fuente's previous important, necessary and fair contract extension. Now, perhaps we need to do something, within our capabilities, to improve and expand that relationship. I am proud of how he helped us reach an agreement then. In 2030, we will have a rendezvous with history, and we want Luis de la Fuente to be a part of it".
Louzan's statement is proof of the next step that RFEF wants to aim for, which is to maintain stability on the Spanish national team coaching bench, in order to best prepare for the 2030 World Cup. This is a tournament where Spain is one of the co-hosts and does not hide its ambition to defend the title.
Luis de la Fuente is 65 years old this year, leading the Spanish national team since 2022. Under his leadership, the Spanish team opened the most successful era in history when they won the Nations League 2023, EURO 2024 and World Cup 2026.
With the successes under Fuente, it is reasonable for him to be invited to extend his contract. In addition to being more attached to La Roja, Mr. Fuente may receive a higher remuneration, commensurate with the achievements he has achieved.
Currently, the salary he receives is about 2 million Euros/year, much lower than some other colleagues. Spanish media revealed that the salary that Carlo Ancelotti receives at the Brazilian national team is up to 20 million Euros/year.
