On the evening of January 5, the Vietnamese team defeated the Thai team with a score of 3-2 in the second leg of the 2024 ASEAN Cup final right at the opponent's Rajamangala stadium (total score 5-3 in favor of Vietnam) to thereby win the championship for the third time in this playground.
It is worth mentioning that in this match, Thai player Supachok scored an ugly goal against Dinh Trieu. Specifically, after discovering that a teammate was in pain, goalkeeper Dinh Trieu proactively kicked the ball out of the sideline.
However, the Thai team did not return the ball in fair play and instead took advantage of the throw-in situation to launch an attack. Too surprised by the opponent's actions, the Vietnamese team's defense could not stop Supachok's dribble, and then this player fired a long-range shot that hit the net of goalkeeper Dinh Trieu.
Of course, this was a valid goal for the Thai team, and the referee had to recognize this goal even though the match was interrupted for quite a while due to the reaction of the players as well as the coaching staff of the Vietnamese team.
“This goal should not have happened. Supachok’s goal did not violate any football rules, but it would have been a beautiful, fair-play situation if he had returned the ball to the Vietnamese team. Because the opponent’s goalkeeper proactively kicked the ball into the sideline when he discovered that a player was injured,” commented Thailand’s Siam Sport.
Thailand’s leading sports newspaper added: “The goal that made it 2-1 seemed to give the War Elephants a mental advantage to open up victory, or at least take the match into extra time. But no, this increased the anger and fighting spirit of the Vietnamese team, so they defeated Thailand right at Rajamangala Stadium and won the 2024 ASEAN Cup championship.”
