Just a few weeks before the ASEAN Cup 2026 kicked off, the Myanmar team decided to change the head coach by appointing Mr. Jorn Andersen. The Norwegian coach who used to coach North Korea and Hong Kong (China) is expected to bring a new face to the team.
However, the quite short preparation time prevented Myanmar from creating many changes. In the last friendly match before the tournament, they lost to Vietnam 0-4.
Previously, Myanmar also lost 0-5 to the Philippines, showing that the defense still had many problems when facing teams with speed and good coordination. The victories against Guam, Pakistan and Afghanistan partly brought confidence, but not enough to erase the limitations in the playing style.
Myanmar's ASEAN Cup 2026 roster still has many familiar pillars, including some players playing in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Mr. Jorn Andersen admitted that the team still needs more time to improve and aim for more positive results at the tournament.
On the other side, Malaysia also faces many difficulties. After parting ways with coach Peter Cklamovski, the country's Football Federation reappointed Mr. Tan Cheng Hoe to temporarily lead the national team.
Because the ASEAN Cup did not take place during FIFA Days, many clubs refused to release players, making it impossible for Malaysia to call up its strongest force.
Malaysia only has about a week of concentration before going to Yangon to play. The squad includes experienced veterans and naturalized players such as Endrick Dos Santos, Paulo Josue, Sergio Aguero and Mohamadou Sumareh.
The match between Myanmar vs Malaysia takes place at 5:00 PM today (July 25th) and is broadcast live on FPT Play.
