Overview information
Host Myanmar is ranked 158th in the world. They have regularly participated in the ASEAN Cup since the tournament was born in 1996, but have never won the championship. Myanmar's best achievement is the semi-finals in 2004 and 2016. But in the last 4 tournaments, they have all been eliminated in the group stage.
Meanwhile, Malaysia is ranked 136th in the world. They are a team with many achievements in the region when they won the ASEAN Cup in 2010 and repeatedly ranked in the Top 3. However, in the 2024 tournament, they were eliminated early.
Both teams just changed coaches not long ago. On the Myanmar side, they gave the opportunity to Jorn Andersen - former coach of the DPRK and Hong Kong (China) teams. Meanwhile, Mr. Tan Cheng Hoe holds the position of interim coach of the Malaysian team.
The Malaysian team is rated higher, but they will face a big challenge when Mr. Tan Cheng Hoe has called up nine players who have never worn the national team jersey. They will combine with experienced people such as Paulo Josue, Mohamadou Sumareh and Syafiq Ahmad, with the goal of competing for a ticket to the semi-finals.
Looking at Group B, Thailand is the brightest candidate. I think the remaining teams will have equal opportunities to advance to the next round. In any tournament, the first match is always the most difficult. This match with Myanmar is very important. We have a good combination of veteran players and players under 23 years old, and some of them are called up for the first time, so hopefully we will get positive results," Mr. Tan Cheng Hoe said.
Meanwhile, coach Andersen confidently looks forward to the match against Malaysia. He said: "We are playing at home and we want to win. We know the match will be difficult because some teams in the group are ranked higher than us and possess better resources and quality. However, if we can play with determination, impose our playing style and attack Malaysia, we may have a chance".
Head-to-head record
In the previous six encounters at the ASEAN Cup, Malaysia and Myanmar each won two matches, and the remaining two matches ended in a draw.
However, Malaysia has won in the last two encounters, including a convincing 3-0 victory in 2022. However, with the current strength of the two teams, it is not easy for the Malaysian team to be able to re-establish a resounding victory like four years ago.
Analysis
Myanmar team just lost to Vietnam team 0-4 in a recent friendly match. However, coach Andersen is satisfied with the spirit as well as the progress in the playing style they have shown. With home advantage, Myanmar team is confident that they will attack head-on, impose their playing style to win all 3 points. Because they determine that if they draw, their chances of going further will be very difficult.
Score prediction: Myanmar 2-1 Malaysia.
