Laos, ranked 186th in the world, is rated much lower than Vietnam (ranked 116th). In fact, in the history of the AFF Cup (formerly known as the Tiger Cup), Vietnam has had a superior head-to-head record compared to its opponents.
The head-to-head record between Laos and Vietnam since 1996 shows that Vietnam has met its opponents 10 times in the group stage. In these 10 matches, generations of Vietnam have won 9 times, drawn 1, scored 40 goals, and conceded 2 goals.
The only draw between the two teams took place at the 1996 Tiger Cup. At that time, Le Huynh Duc equalized 1-1 for the Vietnamese team at the end of the second half, after letting Luang score the opening goal.
At the 1998 Tiger Cup, the Vietnamese team beat Laos 4-1 at home with goals from Hong Son, Van Sy and a double from Huynh Duc. Those were also two rare matches in which the neighboring team scored against the Vietnamese team.
Since 2000, Laos has met Vietnam in 8 group stage matches. They lost all of them, conceding 35 goals and scoring none.
At the AFF Cup 2022, the Vietnamese team also played their opening match on the field of the Lao team. The result was that Mr. Park Hang-seo's team won 6-0 with goals from Hung Dung, Tien Linh, Doan Van Hau, Ho Tan Tai, Nguyen Van Toan and Vu Van Thanh.
Previously at the AFF Cup 2018 and 2020, Mr. Park's Vietnam team also defeated Laos with scores of 3-0 and 2-0 in the group stage.
The Lao team is currently led by Korean coach Ha Hyeok-jun – a compatriot of Vietnam’s Kim Sang-sik. They also have a young generation of players, with an average age of only 23.1 and have played together for many years.
Before the AFF Cup 2024, the Lao team had two notable friendly matches with the results of losing 1-3 to Malaysia and drawing 1-1 with Thailand. With their form and home field advantage, Mr. Ha Hyeok-jun's team is determined to create a surprise for Quang Hai and his teammates.
