Previously, at around 3:00 p.m. on March 29, CDC Thai Binh received information about cases of students in the same class who were exposed to measles-positive cases at Tran Phu Secondary School, Thai Binh City.
CDC Thai Binh has sent a monitoring team to investigate and collect samples for testing suspected cases. At the same time, coordinate with the Thai Binh City Medical Center to direct and implement rapid handling activities for epidemic prevention and control in the field.
Initial monitoring and treatment results showed that on March 24, patient N.T.H (student of class 7A6, Tran Phu Secondary School) showed signs of high fever and fatigue, and was given medicine and treated at home by his family.
On March 26, the child had rashes in the face, back and palms, high fever, and was admitted to Lam Hoa General Hospital for examination and testing to diagnose positive for measles. After that, the patient was prescribed medicine and treated at home (the patient had to stay home from school from March 27).
On March 27, in class 7A6, Tran Phu Secondary School recorded 8 more cases of students showing signs of high fever, fatigue, and scattered rashes on the skin of the face, back, palms, and feet. Suspicious cases were all monitored and treated by their families at home and were not screened at the hospital.
On March 29, after receiving information from the Thai Binh City Medical Center, the Thai Binh CDC sent a monitoring team to investigate a cluster of suspected measles cases at class 7A6, taking samples for 7/8 cases with symptoms of the disease (1 case in which the family did not agree to take samples).
The results recorded 7/7 test samples with positive measles results. Currently, the children are being monitored and treated at home by their families, and no school treats them in hospitals.
Regarding the epidemiological history of the source case (pediatric N.T.H), according to CDC Thai Binh, it did not go to the epidemic area for 14 days before the start; it is unknown the history of contact with the identified case.
Immediately after the above measles case appeared, CDC Thai Binh coordinated with Thai Binh City Medical Center to urgently deploy investigation activities, handle outbreaks, and prevent epidemics.
Accordingly, research on cases has been conducted, samples have been taken for testing of suspected cases and epidemic prevention activities have been deployed at Tran Phu Secondary School and in the community; near- contacts have been managed and monitored according to regulations.
For cases that have tested positive for measles, quarantine and provide patient with medical care within the day from the rash. Mild illness for home isolation (ley off from school, work, not participating in collective activities, gathering in large groups). In case the disease becomes severe or shows signs of complications, treatment and isolation at medical facilities must be carried out.
For Tran Phu Secondary School, the school is requested to let 7A6 students stay home from school and quarantine them for 7 days. Make a list of students in close contact with risk factors and monitor their health status within 14 days from the last contact.
Propagate to families of students in close contact to self-monitor, detect early symptoms of the disease, especially fever, rash on the skin and immediately notify health workers.
Coordinate with De Tham Ward Health Station to carry out environmental sanitation activities, classroom hygiene, disinfect floor, table and chair, door handles, toys, general hygiene areas with soap or conventional disinfectants or disinfectant solutions.
Request the De Tham Ward Health Station to send staff to regularly support the school in disease prevention activities. Monitor the health status of all students, teachers, staff, and workers every day to detect new cases until the outbreak stops. Implement outbreak/outbreak reports in accordance with regulations.
