Trade unions at all levels have admitted over 1.2 million new union members
According to the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, the number of union members and grassroots unions has increased steadily over the years. By the end of 2024, with the outstanding efforts of trade unions at all levels, trade unions at all levels have admitted over 1.2 million new union members, bringing the total number of union members nationwide to nearly 12 million union members.
Every year, thousands of new grassroots trade unions are established, especially in the non-state sector and foreign-invested enterprises. In 2024 alone, the whole country established 10,976 new grassroots trade unions, bringing the total number of grassroots trade unions to 127,357; 2,165 grassroots trade unions were established under the new method.
The quality of grassroots trade union activities continues to improve. Trade unions, especially in industrial parks and export processing zones, have made many innovations in their methods of operation, closely linked with union members and workers, contributing to stabilizing labor relations, reducing collective work stoppages and spontaneous strikes, enhancing the representative role and protecting the legitimate rights of workers.
Recently, at the seminar "Promoting the development of union members, establishing the grassroots colleges and the development of the Party in the enterprise", Vice Chairman of the VGCL Nguyen Xuan Hung said, in order to continue innovating and improving the efficiency of the development of union members, establishing the grassroots colleges and the development of the Party in the enterprise ... The union levels need to raise the awareness and responsibility of the union of the union of the union of the union of the union of the union of the grassroots union.
"We need to clearly identify: Community is the vast socio -political organization of the working class, an important element in the political system under the leadership of the Party. The development of union members, establishing a college organization and party organization in enterprises is not only the duty of the union organization but also the responsibility of the political system - from the Party committees, the government to the Vice President Nguyen Xuan.
Along with that, trade unions at all levels need to be flexible, close to reality, based on the real needs of workers; apply technology, social networks... to propagate, mobilize, create trust and voluntary participation in trade union organizations. In particular, in the context of the political system's apparatus being streamlined, reducing the intermediate level, it is necessary to strongly increase the application of digital technology, effectively use union institutions, labor consulting and support centers... to approach, mobilize and protect the rights of union members and workers more effectively.
The Trade Union needs to closely coordinate with Party committees at all levels, local authorities and relevant agencies to promote Party development in enterprises.
Strengthen training and fostering union cadres at all levels, especially grassroots union cadres - those who directly work in propaganda, mobilization and organization of activities closely linked to union members and workers.
Using reputable union members to mobilize union members
Mr. Duong Van Thai - Chairman of the Trade Union of Industrial Parks of Thai Nguyen province said that in 2017, the Trade Union of Thai Nguyen Industrial Parks had only 42 grassroots trade unions with more than 7,000 union members. Currently, this number has increased to 119 grassroots unions with nearly 34,000 union members, marking a remarkable development in quantity and quality.
In 2024, the Trade Union of Industrial Parks of Thai Nguyen province established 30 grassroots trade unions, developing 5,000 new union members; in the first 5 months of 2025, 8 new grassroots trade unions were developed with 4,654 union members, achieving and exceeding the annual target of 200%.
According to Mr. Duong Van Thai, to achieve these successes, the Standing Committee of the Industrial Parks Trade Union has done a good job of propaganda, mobilization to develop union members and establish grassroots trade unions in enterprises.
The trade union proactively meets, mobilizes and persuades business owners to create conditions for establishing an organization, while promoting the role of trade unions in protecting workers' rights and supporting businesses to manage workers well.
In particular, the Trade Union of Industrial Parks of Thai Nguyen province has innovated the method of mobilizing union members by selecting prestigious and influential individuals at enterprises to join the Mobilization Committee (including 5-7 people). This method is very effective, because workers are propagandized by friends and colleagues themselves, so it is easy to accept. When the union came to promote for the second time, most workers were ready to write applications to join the organization" - Mr. Duong Van Thai shared.
