Labor supply and demand disparity in Can Tho

MỸ LY |

When recruitment demand increases, businesses not only face the problem of finding people but also have to try to retain workers in the context of an increasingly competitive job market.

Increased recruitment demand

Participating in the online job transaction session in the third quarter of 2026 organized by the Can Tho City Employment Service Center (DVVL), Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tao - Human Resources Manager of Chau Duc Factory (BM Windows Joint Stock Company) - said that the factory is recruiting about 300 workers.

According to Mr. Tao, the company is expanding its search for labor sources in distant provinces, including the Mekong Delta region, as labor sources in neighboring localities are starting to run out. The addition of personnel is to meet production needs in the last months of the year and during Tet.

The majority of workers are currently stable at companies to wait to receive gifts and Tet bonuses, and then can consider finding a new job.

Therefore, the current labor recruitment also faces some difficulties," Mr. Tao said.

The report analyzing the labor market in Can Tho City in the first 6 months of 2026 and forecasting the labor demand in the last 6 months of the year by the City DVVL Center shows a relative disparity between labor supply and demand in occupational groups.

The assessment is based on data collected from 1,003 businesses with recruitment needs, with 68,692 vacant jobs to be recruited and job search needs of 59,795 workers.

In which, the occupational group with a fairly large labor supply-demand gap is garment - handicrafts - food processing - plastics - printing, with a labor demand rate of up to 58.65% while the labor supply rate is only 41.35%.

Keeping workers

Master of Public Policy Nguyen Tuan Anh - Saigon Industry Corporation - said that previously, a stable job, a relatively high salary and full insurance had a considerable attraction.

Currently, salary is still an important factor but is no longer the only criterion for young workers.

Workers are also interested in working hours, environment, management methods, living conditions, vocational learning opportunities and future development potential. This shows that the labor market is gradually shifting from businesses choosing workers to the trend of both sides choosing each other" - Master Nguyen Tuan Anh analyzed.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Huy - Managing Director of the Faculty of Finance - Banking (Nguyen Trai University) - said that businesses need to promote digitalization, automation, technology innovation, labor retraining and gradually shift to stages with high added value. This is also a direction suitable for the development orientation of the processing industry, logistics, digital economy and high-tech industries.

According to Mr. Huy, the core point is to create a "positive circle": Higher productivity helps businesses have the ability to pay better income; better income and working conditions help retain skilled workers; stable labor force continues to contribute to improving productivity.
