Workers worried that reduced working hours will greatly affect income

When working hours are reduced, many workers are worried that wages will also decrease accordingly.

Mr. Pham Van Tuan (from Ninh Binh) - fabric spreading worker, earning salaries over time. On average, he works about 9 hours a day, equivalent to 54 hours a week. With this intensity of work, he receives about 8 million VND per month.

9 hours a day, 54 hours a week, doing enough 26 jobs, I only get 8 million VND. If I reduce working hours, my salary will be less than 7 million VND. Now all expenses have increased, 7 million VND is very difficult to spend stably for life" - Mr. Tuan shared.

Although paid according to time, his work is still associated with specific production norms. According to Mr. Tuan, in 9 working hours, he has to try very hard to complete the amount of goods delivered.

Therefore, if working hours are reduced to more than 7 hours per day, he is worried that it will be difficult to complete the norm.

According to the male worker, having to focus on completing a large amount of work in a short time can affect the health and spirit of workers.

He also believes that for workers who receive salaries over time, basic salary is the main factor determining income.

If working hours are reduced to more than 7 hours per day and you still want to ensure a living standard, according to him, the basic salary needs to be adjusted to increase at least 1.5 times compared to the present.

Sharing concerns, Ms. Pham Thi Dan (Ninh Binh) - a worker working in the form of output contracts - also said that she does not want to reduce working hours too much, because it will directly affect income.

Currently, Ms. Dan works an average of about 10 hours a day, earning nearly 11 million VND/month.

According to her, if she only works 8 hours, or even less, her income can be reduced to about 7-8 million VND. In addition to the output produced, each day she works overtime for 2 hours, she is also supported by the company with an additional 40,000 VND, contributing to a significant improvement in income.

The female worker said that the recruitment situation at the enterprise is currently quite difficult. Due to a shortage of human resources, she and many colleagues often have to work overtime, even at times having to work overtime all day on Sunday to keep up with the delivery schedule.

If working hours are reduced, businesses will have to recruit a lot more manpower or be forced to reduce the number of orders. And when orders decrease, not only businesses are affected by profits but workers' incomes also decrease" - Ms. Dan shared.

From the reality of work, Ms. Dan believes that workers should be allowed to work overtime but not more than 9.5 hours per day. At the same time, she suggested that workers should have half a Saturday afternoon off to have time to rest and regenerate labor.

Trying to work overtime for 1-2 hours each day, I can still meet it, both ensuring income and not being overworked. If I have an extra Saturday afternoon off, workers will have time to relax and regain strength to work more effectively during the week" - Ms. Dan expressed.
