Article 8 of the 2019 Law on Militia and Self-Defense Forces stipulates as follows:
Age and term of service in the Militia and Self-Defense Forces in peacetime
1. Male citizens from 18 to 45 years old, female citizens from 18 to 40 years old are obliged to join the Militia; if they volunteer to join the Militia, they can extend their service until they are 50 years old for men, and until they are 45 years old for women.
2. The term of service for participating in the On-Site Militia, Mobile Militia, Coastal Militia, Air Defense Militia, Artillery, Reconnaissance, Information, Engineering, Chemical Defense, and Medical Militia is 04 years; for the Standing Militia is 2 years.
Based on the requirements and national defense and military tasks of localities, agencies and organizations, the term of service in the Militia and Self-Defense Forces may be extended but not exceeding 2 years; for maritime militia, self-defense forces and commanders of Militia and Self-Defense Forces units, it may be extended but not exceeding the age specified in Clause 1 of this Article.
3. The Chairman of the People's Committee at the commune level, the Chairman of the People's Committee at the district level where there is no commune-level administrative unit, the head of an agency or organization shall decide to extend the age and term of performing the obligation to participate in the Militia and Self-Defense Force as prescribed in this Article.
Thus, the age of female citizens to join the Militia in peacetime is from 18 to 40 years old.
In case female citizens volunteer to join the Militia, the age of female citizens to join the Militia in peacetime can be extended to 45 years old.
