Efforts of the female doctor and the nursing hospital
Before 2020, when Nam Quang Tri Eye Hospital had few specialized doctors and lacked machinery, many people with serious eye diseases were forced to be transferred. There are many cases where patients with lumpy skin disease are ethnic minorities who come to the hospital, then decide to "turn around" and return home when they are transferred to the hospital because of travel and accommodation costs. Relying on the opportunity to go to higher-level treatment, they face the risk of blindness. Witnessing that reality, Dr. Bui Thi Van Anh, then Deputy Director of the hospital, determined to self-study to treat patients.
She proactively sought scholarships, went to France and the US to update her expertise, then returned to propose investing in equipment, building processes and organizing internal training. Since 2020, the hospital has implemented retina chupments, OCT blood vessel chupments, endometriosis injections and fiber optic laser. Techniques that were originally only applied in large centers are now applied right in Quang Tri, helping patients to be diagnosed early, intervene promptly and monitor periodically right in the locality.
From 2020 to present, the hospital has treated an average of 3,000 cases of retinopathy each year. Patients have less time and referral costs, family pressure is reduced, society's burden is reduced.
In 2021, the COVID-19 epidemic was complicated, at that time many patients were hospitalized with peripheral cornea ulcers. If cornea coverage is delayed, the patient is at risk of severe infection and will be forced to open the eye. The hospital has not yet implemented this technique, but it is also difficult to transfer to a higher-level hospital due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Not having to watch the patient lose the eyeball, Dr. Van Anh and her team applied multi-layered autologous conjunctival transplantation techniques to replace and preserve the eyeball. This timely initiative opens the door to life for hundreds of patients during the complicated epidemic period, while creating a foundation for further treatment regimens.
The leader of the initiative for the sick
Not only directly examining, surging and controlling the technical process, Dr. Van Anh is also the focal point for organizing training and directing the line. She disseminated procedures for treating endometriosis, blindness prevention measures, and medical waste safety; deployed seven primary eye care classes for the elderly in many localities, contributing to early detection and timely treatment for high-risk groups.
In the role of Director of Nam Quang Tri Eye Hospital, Party Cell Secretary, Chairman of the Provincial Young Physicians Association, Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Branding Association and the V given eye Club, she promotes governance innovation associated with digital transformation. In 2025, Dr. Van Anh will join the Department of Health's Steering Committee on electronic medical records and directly manage the implementation at the unit, helping the dossier to be scientifically managed, shortening waiting time for patients.
Combining treatment with research, Dr. Van Anh is the author and co-author of 5 international reports, handling many department-level topics on diabetes retina treatment with endometriosis injection, phaco surgery in the heavy near-identity eye, fixed unstitial endometriosis, phaco combined with crunches in closed-angle glomine. Her two provincial-level initiatives on eye drops for diagnostic bulging and multi-layered autologous lining photos were awarded at the Provincial Technical Innovation Competition. In 2021, she received the Creative Labor Certificate from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor.
The persistent efforts of the female doctor are recognized through the titles of Emulation Fighter, Certificates of Merit of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, and the Vietnam Brand Association. In 2025, Dr. Van Anh received a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister for her contribution to the patriotic emulation movement in the health sector from 2020 to 2025. Here, she is one of 80 individuals and groups honored at the 11th Patriotic Emulation Congress for Workers and Civil Servants organized by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor.
