On August 29, Dong Thap Provincial Federation of Labor organized a conference on developing union members and establishing grassroots unions, with the participation of nearly 50 delegates from provincial departments, branches, boards, the Provincial Federation of Labor Office, direct superior grassroots unions, and grassroots unions of enterprises with a large number of union members and workers. Ms. Huynh Thi Tuyet Vui - President of Dong Thap Provincial Federation of Labor, Head of the Steering Committee for developing union members and establishing grassroots unions for the period 2023 - 2028 - chaired the conference.
Information at the conference said that as of August 20, the work of developing new grassroots trade unions and non-state sector trade unions according to the targets assigned by the General Confederation of Labor has achieved positive results.
Union membership actually increased: formal labor sector 4,461/8,000, rate 55.76%; informal labor sector 245/400, rate 61.25%. Newly established 20 non-state sector trade unions, with 15/20 units having 25 or more workers; established 9/3 informal sector trade unions, rate 303%. The whole province currently has 1,373 trade unions with 87,927 union members/90,673 employees.
At the conference, delegates also shared many good practices and creative solutions in developing union members and establishing grassroots unions, emphasizing the role and quality of advice from union officials as decisive factors.
However, according to delegates, the biggest difficulty at present is that the number of employees at the grassroots trade unions is small, and they have to carry out tasks at the same time, which also partly affects the leadership and implementation of the work of developing union members and establishing grassroots trade unions; some units have not boldly proposed to the Party Committee, the support of the government and departments, and unions at the same level to support and create conditions for the work of developing union members and establishing grassroots trade unions; many business owners seek to limit the number of workers joining trade unions and intervene in the process of establishing grassroots trade unions, etc.
Speaking at the conference, Ms. Huynh Thi Tuyet Vui said: Developing union members and building strong grassroots unions is a vital task. In the coming time, unions at all levels need to focus, make efforts, and do a good job of advising the Party Committee, gaining support from the government and related units.
In particular, it is necessary to focus on promoting the role of the Steering Committee, the Committee for Mobilizing Union Member Development, and Establishing Grassroots Trade Unions in regularly updating and reflecting progress; promptly reflecting recommendations and proposals of units; proactively grasping the situation of enterprises and workers in enterprises in the area to propagate and mobilize union member development and establish Grassroots Trade Unions; paying attention to organizing preliminary and final summaries to draw experience, praising units that have done well in developing union members and building strong Grassroots Trade Unions.
