According to Bloomberg author Mark Gurman, Apple is aiming to expand its smart wearables in the future, and the possibility of AirPods being equipped with small cameras has been mentioned. However, Gurman did not explain specifically what the purpose of these cameras would be.
Accordingly, these cameras are not used to take pictures but will actually function as infrared sensors.
In a June 2024 article, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple plans to mass produce a new line of AirPods with infrared cameras in 2026. He said that this infrared camera component will be similar to the Face ID recognition part on the iPhone.
Kuo added that the new AirPods will offer an improved spatial audio experience when used with Apple Vision Pro mixed reality glasses.
“For example, when users watch a video with Vision Pro and wear the new AirPods, if they turn their head in a particular direction, the sound source from that direction will be highlighted, creating a more immersive spatial audio experience,” Kuo wrote.
Additionally, these infrared cameras can also support “spatial gesture control,” allowing users to interact with the device using hand movements.
If the 2026 mass production roadmap isn't delayed, new AirPods with infrared cameras could launch in 2026 or 2027.
