Apple reveals how to prove the authenticity of a photo

Apple Reference Image on iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max creates a digital record as soon as the photo is taken, helping to verify the origin and check the photo.

Apple is adding a new method to verify the origin of photos on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The technology, called Apple Reference Image, is likened by Apple to a "digital transcription" to prove that a photo was taken with a real camera at a specific time.

Photo verification right from camera sensor

According to Apple, Apple Reference Image puts the camera sensor into a separate reference mode. Immediately after shooting, the sensor will encode pixel data and prevent sensor control software from changing this data.

The difference lies in the authentication time. Some image authentication systems only sign data after the image has undergone software processing. Apple believes that this method creates a risk of data being interfered with before being authenticated.

With Apple Reference Image, an original record is created parallel to a regular photo. This record contains pixel data, sensor information, and encoded timestamps.

Apple calls this a "safe digital record", stored on the device and cannot be edited like normal photos.

Photo verification via Private Cloud Compute

When users want to verify a photo, the reference record is sent in its original state to Private Cloud Compute - Apple's private cloud computing system.

Here, images are processed in an environment designed by Apple to ensure privacy and verification capabilities. Private Cloud Compute will calculate reliability points for each image.

Apple said that the system is designed to counter many forms of attacks, including data entry, compromised operating system, hardware interference and attacks targeting encryption mechanisms.

If the system is detected to be compromised or showing signs of fraud, Apple may recall the authentication capability of each image or the entire sensor.

Apple also said that Reference Image is designed to protect the privacy of photographers. The system does not publicize clear identification information about the photographer and does not create public links between photos taken from the same sensor.

Helps distinguish real photos from AI-generated content

In the context of AI tools becoming increasingly easy to create and edit images, Apple believes that verifying the origin can help users check whether a photo is actually taken by the camera or not.

However, Apple Reference Image is not a photo editing tool. Users can still edit regular photos, while the reference record is kept to serve verification.

This feature is also not turned on by default for all cameras. Apple Reference Image is an option and is currently limited to the main camera sensor on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
