Gender inequality in the AI labor market

A report from LinkedIn warns of gender inequality in AI when women only account for a low proportion in leadership positions.

A report from LinkedIn's Institute for Economic Chart Research points out deep gender inequality in the global artificial intelligence labor market. The explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) creates jobs with the fastest growth and highest incomes globally.

However, women are rarely represented in roles from the highest management level to lower-level employee positions at AI companies.

According to LinkedIn's analysis of about 15,000 companies in 27 countries around the world, women with artificial intelligence backgrounds only account for 13% of senior executive positions in the industry, compared to about 19% in fields not related to artificial intelligence.

In general, women account for 27% of positions related to artificial intelligence (AI) at AI companies, compared to 31% at companies not in the AI field. If women continue to hold a small disproportionate proportion in AI positions, they will miss the opportunity for long-term economic advancement and decision-making power, according to Sarah Steinberg, head of global public policy cooperation at LinkedIn.

The AI economy is at risk of being shaped without the views and talents of half of the labor force," Sarah Steinberg shared with Bloomberg.

As AI is increasingly being widely applied in all fields, from recruitment and lending to healthcare and law enforcement, increasing concerns are that the lack of diversity in the industry may exacerbate existing inequality on a much larger scale.

This technology can absorb prejudices in the data used to train it and recreate them in ways that shape who gets jobs, loans, services and opportunities - or even how people are treated by the criminal justice system. For example, tools to convert text into prejudiced images used to create sketches of suspects can contribute to wrongful convictions.

In the US, the world's leading country in AI technology, the number of job recruitments in the AI sector has doubled in recent years and the average salary for this position is more than double compared to positions not related to AI, according to a report by the LinkedIn Institute for Economic Chart Research.

Among the women holding leading positions in the field of AI are Daniela Amodei, co-founder of Anthropic PBC and AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li of World Labs.
