Xiaomi has recently expanded its global recall for the 33W 20,000mAh (intended cable) backup battery product, the PB2030MI, which will be produced from August to September 2024.
This is a continuation of the previous recall in the Chinese market, with the goal of ensuring safety for consumers against the risk of products overheating.
Nearly 147,000 devices are subject to recall
According to Xiaomi, a total of 146,891 Backup Battery products of this type have been sold worldwide and are all subject to recall and refund.
The reason comes from the fact that a batch of batteries using Cell 126280 battery version 2.0 is likely to overheat under certain conditions.
This risk, although recognized in the limited number of reports, can still cause fire and explosion, directly affecting the safety of users.
The company said the recall decision was taken widely as a preventive measure, aiming to minimize potential risks.
This is also a step to demonstrate Xiaomi's commitment to putting product safety first.
Users need to check their serial numbers
To determine whether their product is eligible for recall or not, customers are advised to check the serial number printed on the back of the backup battery.
Xiaomi also provides an online verification tool on its official website. In case the device is blurred, missing or cannot read the serial number, users will not be supported with a refund.
Notably, Xiaomi also emphasized that its other backup batteries, which use other Cell batteries, are not subject to this recall. That means only the PB2030MI model is affected.
Refund process
Customers whose products are subject to revocation will be refunded their entire purchase amount. There are two ways to do the procedure:
- Go directly to Xiaomi Home store for support staff to check the serial number, confirm the product status and refund.
- Self-treat the product by discharging all the batteries, discarding them safely, then upload the destroyed evidence and detailed information of the product on Xiaomi's official website for a refund.
The company describes this process as simple and transparent, ensuring the rights of customers as well as avoiding defective products still circulating on the market.
Commitment from Xiaomi
In a press release, Xiaomi has officially apologized for the inconvenience caused by the incident to consumers. The company affirmed that this was a voluntary decision, not forced by the management agency, with the purpose of preventing incidents that could occur in the future.
The company also recommends that customers who own PB2030MI backup batteries should quickly check the serial number and complete the refund process as soon as possible, to ensure that they do not use products with safety risks.
