Android users have long been waiting for more flagship phones to support Qi2, a wireless charging standard based on MagSafe technology.
Now, according to a press release from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) - an international non-profit organization established to promote and develop global wireless charging standards, users can expect "an acceleration of Qi2-integrated Android devices in 2025".
The two leading Android brands, Samsung and Google, have committed to adopting the Qi2 standard, which offers 15W wireless charging speeds and magnetic alignment capabilities.
"Qi2's meteoric rise will continue in 2025. You can expect Qi2-enabled Samsung Galaxy devices starting in 2025," Samsung said in a press release.
This statement suggests that the upcoming Galaxy S25 series could become the first Galaxy series to support Qi2 wireless charging and accessories.
Not just Samsung, Google is also contributing to bringing Qi2 to more Android phones in its own way.
"Google affirms its commitment to supporting the Qi2 wireless charging standard and promoting the application of this technology on Android devices as well as other devices," a Google representative said in a statement.
To date, the majority of the 1.5 billion Qi2 devices worldwide are iPhones, but given Samsung and Google's commitments, the number of Qi2-enabled Android phones could increase dramatically by 2025.
The Qi2 wireless charging standard offers many advantages over previous wireless charging standards such as faster charging speeds, precise magnetic alignment, improved stability and safety.
