Google Maps not only helps users find a way but is also a useful tool to explore shopping and dining locations. However, recently, Google has discovered a series of fake businesses taking advantage of this platform to scam users.
According to CBS News, Google said it has detected and removed more than 10,000 invalid business records on the Google Maps application. At the same time, the company has also filed a lawsuit against those behind this fraud.
The list of fake businesses includes both fake businesses and legitimate businesses whose accounts are taken over by scammers.
The problem was first discovered when a Texas-based business notified Google. The business has discovered an unlicensed locksmith impersonating them on the app. This has prompted Google to conduct a deeper investigation and detect many other cases of fraud.
Finally, Google determined that these scammers are collaborating with subjects in many countries and using social networks to expand their scope of activities.
This is not the first time Google has faced this situation. In 2023, the company blocked and removed about 12 million fake business records. Google has said that if it wins this lawsuit, it will use all the money raised to support anti-fraud organizations.
