Google and Character.AI are moving closer to a major settlement agreement in lawsuits related to chatbots being accused of causing serious harm to teenagers. This is considered the first important legal settlement move in the field of artificial intelligence technology in the face of allegations of consequences for young users.
According to Techcrunch, Google and startup Character.AI have reached a principled consensus with some families whose teenage children commit suicide or self-harm after interacting with the chatbot. The parties are currently continuing negotiations to complete the details of the agreement.
This is one of the first settlements directly related to allegations that AI businesses cause serious harm to users. This development is expected to be closely monitored by large technology companies such as OpenAI and Meta, as they are also facing similar lawsuits.
The settlement agreements are said to include monetary compensation, but court records released show that neither side recognizes legal responsibility.
TechCrunch said it has contacted both Google and Character.AI to request comments, but has not received an official response.
