From 2024, many leaked information suggests that Apple is planning to equip the iPhone 18 Pro line with a changeable aperture camera. However, new sources from China show that this feature may only appear on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
According to Ice Universe leaker, iPhone 18 Pro Max will be equipped with adjustable aperture to bring a better photo taking experience. If this information is accurate, this will be a notable change because Apple has never used a camera with a changed aperture on iPhone.
From iPhone 14 Pro to iPhone 17 Pro, the main camera all uses a fixed aperture ƒ/1.78. With the changed aperture, iPhone 18 Pro Max can allow adjusting the amount of light entering the lens, similar to how it works on some specialized cameras.
This technology can also help users control the depth of field, and process better in bright light conditions. Thanks to that, the subject can be highlighted while the background is controlled as desired. However, Apple's method of deploying this feature is still unclear and it is likely that part of the process will be automated.
Notably, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg also gave a similar opinion. When analyzing images in the invitation letter to Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event, Gurman believes that the light effect behind the Apple logo may be a suggestion of "mechanical aperture" on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
If the above information is accurate, users who choose the standard iPhone 18 Pro will not be equipped with this camera feature.
In addition to the changed aperture camera, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to be larger and heavier than its predecessor. The remaining specifications and features of the device are expected to be similar to the iPhone 18 Pro.
Apple is said to be launching the first iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and folding screen iPhone at the event taking place on September 9.
