LinkedIn uses AI to create and improve user experience

LinkedIn has just upgraded its News Feed using generative AI, while tightening control over automated comments and view-bait content.

The professional social networking platform LinkedIn has just announced a series of important updates for the Feed, in which the new content ranking system based on artificial intelligence (AI) stands out.

At the same time, the company also strengthens measures to limit automated comments and posts only aimed at attracting interaction.

According to LinkedIn, these changes are aimed at making the News Feed more useful and suitable for the expert community, while maintaining authenticity in conversations on the platform.

The focus of the update is a new content ranking system using generative artificial intelligence models.

LinkedIn said they are applying larger chain models called Generative Recommenders, combined with large language models (LLM), to better understand the content of posts as well as changes in user preferences over time.

These AI models analyze many different signals to determine which posts should appear on each user's News Feed.

These signals include user information shared on personal profiles such as industry, work experience, skills and geographical location.

The system also tracks how users interact with content, including posts they often read, comment on, or skip.

Thanks to combining these data, LinkedIn News Feeds can quickly adapt when users start to be interested in new topics or participate in other discussions.

LinkedIn said that the system is designed to display posts more appropriately and promptly, not only from direct connections but also from experts outside the user network.

In addition to improving the algorithm, LinkedIn is also strengthening measures to limit unauthentic activities on the platform.

Specifically, the company is tightening control over automated commentary tools, virtual interaction groups and the use of third-party software to increase interactions.

LinkedIn affirms that browser extensions or automated feedback tools will not be allowed to be used on the platform.

The abnormal behavior detection system is also being upgraded to identify and minimize these activities.

The platform is also looking for ways to reduce content that they call "general" or "view-baiting".

In the near future, LinkedIn plans to limit the reach of posts designed primarily to attract comments without bringing real information value.

LinkedIn said they want to prioritize valuable content such as industry analysis, professional experience sharing, or in-depth discussions about workplace trends.

The new update also focuses on improving the user experience for new users. Because the News Feeds often rely on activity history to propose content, new members may not have received appropriate suggestions from the beginning.

According to LinkedIn, these changes are part of a long-term effort to build the News Feed into a reliable space for knowledge exchange and professional discussion.
