According to Bloomberg author Mark Gurman, Apple is expected to launch a completely new design for the MacBook Pro in 2026.
Apple typically maintains a four-year design cycle for the MacBook Pro line, but it looks like the upcoming M5 chip upgrade will be just a chip update and we'll have to wait another year to see a full-blown overhaul.
In this weekend's Power On newsletter, Gurman writes that “the MacBook Pro probably won't get another real overhaul until 2026.”
According to this author, Apple once set a target for a major change in 2025 but encountered delays related to screen technology.
Apple is expected to switch to OLED displays for the next major refresh of the MacBook Pro, similar to the new iPad Pro M4 series.
The new MacBook Pro will also have a thinner design. Apple has made the MacBook Pro line a bit thicker in the past, but it looks like they're changing that.
Gurman also mentioned that the M6 chip will likely be manufactured on a new 2nm process, bringing advanced display technology, a new design, and a big performance improvement, all in one upgrade.
For the 2025 MacBook Pro, users can expect upgrades to the M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chips, but there won't be anything special beyond that chip upgrade.
