Things users need to know when skype is down

NGUYỄN ĐĂNG |

skype, one of the applications opening a new era of Internet communication, has officially stopped working since May 5, 2025.

Users who are still using skype can now switch to the Microsoft Teams platform (free) and use their skype login information, with your contact and chat history automatically switching to Teams.

Users will have until January 2026 to export their data from the skype server. If you don't do so until the set deadline, your data on this platform will be permanently deleted.

Microsoft officially said that the reason for skype's shutdown is to rationalize the company's free communication services for consumers. In this way, the technology giant will be able to adapt more easily to what customers need.

However, the free version of Microsoft Teams has some disadvantages compared to skype. That is a group call that is limited to 60 minutes. In addition, Microsoft has also stopped providing skype Credit since December 2024, making the new calling service for new users no longer available.

Over the past two decades, skype has proven to be one of the most influential IP ( VoIP) voice platforms globally.

skype was founded in 2003 by a group of Estonian engineers. The platform uses the VoIP protocol, a technology that converts audio into digital signals for online transmission. In 2005, eBay bought skype and added video calling features.

In 2011, Microsoft acquired skype for $8.5 billion. At that time, skype had about 170 million users worldwide. However, over the past 14 years, this application has gradually declined, being surpassed by rivals such as Messenger, FaceTime, and WhatsApp.

The rise of Microsoft Teams and the decline of skype in recent years have made Microsoft decide to focus all its efforts on Teams.

In case you don't use Microsoft Teams as a replacement, users can still choose some other apps and platforms to replace skype such as Google Meet, Zoom and Slack.
