Recently, the French government is considering including social network X - a platform owned by billionaire Elon Musk - in a list of adult content providers, in an effort to tighten management and protect minors from inappropriate content in cyberspace.
Accordingly, on June 9, if officially designated as a sex platform, platform X will have to comply with mandatory regulations on age verification for users in France. This means that children in this country may be banned from accessing the application unless the platform implements measures to limit adult content.
Since 2024, Social media X has clearly demonstrated its permission to distribute adult content, so it needs to be considered a platform with adult content, said Ms. Clara Chappaz, French Digital Ministers Office.
Currently, her team is assessing the possibility of making the X platform subject to regulation under new legal regulations, requiring platforms with adult content to take measures to verify the age of users.
In addition, according to her statement on the TV show Quotidien, Ms. Chappaz affirmed that the X platform will soon receive an official notice requesting a ban on adult content or setting up an age verification system similar to specialized adult platforms such as YouPorn.
France had previously set a deadline of June 7 for all platforms providing prostitution to deploy an age-control system. Non-compliant platforms could be fined, removed from search results, or completely blocked in France. Several platforms have opposed the regulation, citing reasons related to privacy and technical feasibility.
Last week, the Tanzanian government decided to block the X platform, citing the platform's dissemination of pornography. In 2024, the Belgian media agency expressed concern that billionaire Elon Musk was turning X into a platform for sharing publicly advertised porn content.
Up to now, social network X has not given an official response to the above comment request.
