Previously, some leaked sources said that Apple expected to release a second-generation AirTag in May or June. This assessment coincides with information from writer Mark Gurman that Apple is aiming for a "middle 2025" time.
However, June is almost over and AirTag 2 has not appeared yet. According to the latest updates, Apple is currently planning to announce AirTag 2 in the fall, likely at the same time as launching the new iPhone in September.
The good news is that Apple has built AirTag 2 compatibleity in iOS 18.6 beta, showing that users do not need to wait until iOS 26 to use the new device. This is a step that is considered more user-friendly.
Although Apple has not officially revealed it, many sources have shared some notable improvements:
Better connection and range: AirTag 2 will integrate a second-generation UWB chip similar to the iPhone 15 series, helping to expand the Precision Finding feature to 60m, compared to the current 15m.
Enhanced security and un tracking: Apple is expected to design AirTag 2 to be more difficult to disable, to limit the behavior of taking advantage of the device to track others by turning off the warning loudspeaker.
Smarter battery warning: For the first time, the new AirTag will display both a weak pin and very weak pin notification, helping users proactively replace the battery before the device loses connection.
With software ready and a leak schedule coinciding with the iPhone event, technology experts say September is the almost certain time for AirTag 2 to officially appear.
