In a recent report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, AirTag 2 is in production testing with three key improvements: Increased operating range; Improved wireless chip; Enhanced security and privacy.
Apple is said to be adding a new ultra-wideband chip to the next generation AirTag, which will triple the range of the device. This means that users will be able to track AirTags from 30-90 meters away, instead of just 10-30 meters as it is now. The new wireless chip will also improve the accuracy of positioning in sparsely populated areas.
In the past, AirTags have been abused to track others unintentionally, and there have been cases where the device has been modified to disable its built-in speaker, making it difficult for the tracked person to detect the presence of the AirTag nearby. Therefore, Apple is expected to upgrade its anti-tracking features, making it easier for users to detect the device if it is used for malicious purposes.
Also according to Bloomberg, AirTag 2 is expected to be released in mid-2025.
With valuable upgrades in range, accuracy and security, AirTag 2 promises to bring a better user experience, meeting both personal needs and enhancing safety.
If you need a tracking solution right now, the first-generation AirTag is still a solid option thanks to its affordable price and solid features. However, if you can wait, the AirTag 2 will definitely be worth the investment when it comes out.
