China promotes AI and robots in agricultural production

AI, robots, drones and automation technology are being increasingly widely applied in Chinese agriculture.

In Jilin province (China), new corn harvesters are equipped with electronic control systems and touch screens. Operators can manage multiple harvesting stages on the same screen.

Also in this area, electric self-propelled robots are also being tested to kill weeds on corn fields. Cameras on robots scan fields, AI distinguishes weeds from crops, then lasers remove weeds without affecting corn plants.

The robot, developed by Truong Xuan University of Science and Technology and partners, has a plant recognition rate of over 99.5%. In tests, the device can handle 50,000-100,000 weeds per hour. The robot is expected to be mass-produced by the end of 2026.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the People's Republic of China (MOA), in the period 2021-2025, the rate of comprehensive mechanization of plowing, planting and harvesting stages reached 76.7%. China currently has more than 300,000 agricultural drones used nationwide.

In Henan (China), Beidou satellite positioning system technology, 5G network, new energy and self-driving drivers are being integrated into agricultural machinery. In Xinjiang (China), new projects focus on operating unmanned cotton fields, smart cultivation and accurate control of water, fertilizers, and pesticides.

According to Mr. Xia Xianfei - a researcher at the Nanjing Agricultural Mechanization Institute of MOA, information technology and AI are being integrated more deeply into agricultural production. Unmanned aerial vehicles and robots can perform heavy, repetitive tasks, thereby improving farming efficiency.

Chinese agricultural machinery is also being brought to foreign markets. Some cotton harvesters have been exported to Central Asia and adjusted to suit local farming conditions.
