On September 18 (local time), the Egyptian captain of the cargo ship M/V Noran died while the ship was anchored at a Russian port, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said it is monitoring the incident that occurred on September 13, when the M/V Noran ship carrying Egyptian sailors was attacked. The consular department is coordinating with the captain's family and carrying out procedures to bring his body back to Egypt. The remaining 8 crew members have returned home.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry did not disclose the exact location of the incident, the perpetrator, or the extent of damage to the ship. According to MarineTraffic maritime data, the ship M/V Noran, flying the Saint Kitts and Nevis flag, was en route from Albania to Batumi, Georgia.
Information from Russia shows that the city of Novorossiysk on September 13 issued a warning of the risk of attack by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Meanwhile, sources from Russia said that the M/V Noran ship was attacked in the air with 6 Ukrainian UAVs immediately after leaving Novorossiysk port in the Black Sea. According to maritime data quoted, the M/V Noran ship was believed to have caught fire after the attack. This information was released by the Russian side and has not been confirmed by the parties involved.
Bringing the captain's body back to Egypt is currently facing obstacles because the area where the ship is still has military operations. Egyptian authorities said they will proceed to recover and repatriate the body when security conditions permit.
