According to information on the App Store, XChat has appeared in pre-order form and is expected to be available for download from April 17.
This is not an upgraded version of the existing direct messaging (DM) feature, but a completely independent application, allowing users to chat and contact any account on X.
The idea of a new messaging system was mentioned by CEO X - Elon Musk from mid-2025. At that time, he said the platform would be built with a completely new architecture and integrated end-to-end encryption to enhance security.
However, instead of just upgrading features in the X application, the company has shifted to developing a separate product.
XChat is designed with many features aimed at privacy and user experience. The application supports end-to-end encryption, allowing editing and deleting messages sent to all conversation participants.
Users can activate self-destructing message mode after a certain period of time, and block screenshots to protect sensitive content.
Not only stopping at text messaging, XChat also supports phone calls between devices and creates large chat groups with a scale of up to 481 members.
Notably, X commits that the application will not contain advertising and will not track user behavior, which is considered a difference in the context that many messaging platforms today rely on data for commercial exploitation.
Currently, iPhone and iPad users can pre-order the application to download it automatically when it is officially released.
If launched as planned, XChat could become an important link in X's ambition to build a "super app", which integrates many services from social networks, messaging to payment in the same platform.
