VideoLAN - the company behind the VLC application revealed this new technology at CES 2025 and demonstrated the actual working feature.
Users will soon be able to use AI-generated captions, which will also be translated into multiple languages, all working offline.
According to VideoLAN, VLC will use AI to automatically generate subtitles for videos. This AI technology can also translate subtitles into the user's chosen language, with more than 100 languages expected to be supported. Notably, all of this process will take place entirely on the user's device, without the need for an internet connection or cloud services.
VideoLAN also shared a series of videos on the X platform, demonstrating the ability to generate real-time captions using open-source AI models. According to the company, this feature will support not only pre-recorded videos but also live broadcasts.
With the integration of artificial intelligence, VLC is not only a multimedia player but also a powerful tool for accessing global content. The ability to create and translate subtitles right on the device, without an internet connection, is especially useful in situations where users do not have network access or are in areas with limited technology.
